Barbara Di Gennaro Splendore, The Reinvention of Theriac. Pharmacy, State, and the Market in Italy (1490-1640)
In her impressive dissertation, Dr. Di Gennaro used theriac and, more generally, Galenic medicine, as a lens through which to understand important social, economic, and cultural elements of early modern Italian history. Her work is wide in scope, situating the history of medicine in early modern Italy in a broader historical and geographical context, and elaborating both a compelling global dimension and connections between the early modern and the modern worlds.
